Job Purpose

The Underwriting Manager will be responsible for developing and managing underwriting and reinsurance activities in accordance with the company’s underwriting and reinsurance policies and standards, with the objective of meeting and exceeding customer and shareholder expectations.

The role reports to the Chief Operations Officer.

Key Responsibilities

  • Oversee underwriting and reinsurance activities of the company.
  • Vet all risks to ensure that only quality business is accepted based on approved rates, supporting profitability and achievement of set loss-ratio targets.
  • Implement underwriting strategies, philosophies, policies and procedures.
  • Ensure achievement of agreed renewal retention targets.
  • Continuously review account performance to ensure profitability.
  • Ensure that risks undertaken by the company are adequately covered through appropriate reinsurance programmes.
  • Ensure optimum utilisation of reinsurance treaties.
  • Design and implement company policies specifically relating to risk surveys.
  • Manage relationships with clients, intermediaries and service providers to ensure agreed service-level agreements are achieved and positive stakeholder relationships are maintained.
  • Ensure adherence to company policies on onboarding new clients and compliance with KYC and AML/CFT requirements.
  • Ensure timely preparation of reports.
  • Supervise, appraise, train and develop staff within the department.
  • Manage staff and resources, provide direction, set goals and ensure departmental objectives are achieved.
  • Perform other duties related to the role as assigned by the Company or Supervisor.
  • Deliver performance requirements as defined in the department’s strategy map, balanced scorecard and personal scorecard.

Performance will be assessed against measures including:

  • Gross Premium Written
  • Net Promoter Score
  • Net Loss Ratio
  • Renewal Retention
  • Debtors Ratio
  • Compliance
  • Personal Scorecard targets

Working Relationships

Internal Relationships

The Underwriting Manager will:

  • Be accountable to the Chief Operations Officer.
  • Work with all departments and Group staff across Britam.
  • Be responsible for:
  • Assistant Underwriting Manager
  • Underwriters and Assistant Underwriters – Broking & Bancassurance
  • Reinsurance Officer
  • Branch Underwriting Team

External Relationships

The role will interact with:

  • Britam customers
  • Insurance sector players
  • Service providers
  • Regulators

Qualifications and Experience

Applicants should have:

  1. A relevant Bachelor’s degree. An MBA is an added advantage.
  2. A professional qualification in Insurance, such as ACII or an equivalent qualification.
  3. At least 7 years of experience in underwriting, including 3–4 years in a management position.
