Job Overview

The U.S. Mission in Tanzania is seeking an eligible and qualified IT Infrastructure Technician to work in its Diplomatic Technology Office.

The successful candidate will install, maintain, repair, and support various IT and communications infrastructure systems used in U.S. Government facilities, vehicles, and official residences.

The role covers telephone/PABX systems, radio communications, structured network cabling, data infrastructure, and audio-visual systems. The technician will also provide technical support during VIP visits and official events held at locations outside the Embassy.

Key Responsibilities

IT and Communications Infrastructure

Install, maintain, repair, and support IT and communications infrastructure.

Work with telephone and PABX systems.

Support radio communication systems.

Install and maintain data and network cabling.

Support audio-visual (AV) systems in U.S. Government facilities and official locations.

Perform installation, termination, testing, troubleshooting, and maintenance of structured data and network cabling.

Technical Support and Events

Support communications requirements for VIP visits and official events.

Set up and operate telephone, radio, and audio-visual communications systems at off-site locations.

Troubleshoot infrastructure and communications equipment.

Use appropriate diagnostic equipment and technical tools to identify and resolve problems.

Equipment and Inventory Management

Maintain accurate inventories of IT and communications equipment.

Maintain records of tools, cabling, equipment, and systems.

Ensure equipment records and documentation remain current and accurate.

Support effective management and accountability of technical resources.

Education Requirements

Applicants must have:

At least two (2) years of post-secondary study at a vocational college or university.

The study must be in Information Technology infrastructure, telecommunications, network systems, or a closely related field.

Applicants should clearly address their education and qualifications in the application.

Experience Requirements

Applicants must have a minimum of two (2) years of hands-on experience involving the installation, repair, maintenance, and troubleshooting of:

Data communications systems

Voice communications systems

Radio communications systems

Audio-visual communications systems

Telephone/PABX systems

Data and network cabling

Experience must include the installation, termination, testing, and troubleshooting of network and data cabling.

Language Requirements

Candidates are required to have:

Level 3 English: Good working knowledge in reading, speaking, and writing.

Kiswahili: Good working knowledge in reading, speaking, and writing.

The language requirements may be assessed through testing.

Job Knowledge

Successful candidates should demonstrate knowledge of:

IT infrastructure theory and practices.

Installation, operation, maintenance, testing, and troubleshooting of IT infrastructure.

Relevant Tanzanian regulations and protocols concerning telecommunications and internet access.

Basic operation of IT endpoints such as radios, telephones, televisions, and audio-visual equipment.

Industry standards relating to cabling, radio, voice, and network infrastructure.

IT and communications equipment inventory management.

Skills and Abilities

Applicants should possess:

Strong administrative and record-keeping skills.

Ability to read and interpret technical documents and schematics in English and the local language.

Effective communication skills when working with technical and management personnel.

Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.

Experience using hand and power tools.

Experience using electronic diagnostic equipment such as:

Drills

Multimeters

Tone generators

Network testers

General proficiency in Microsoft Office and other productivity applications.

Ability to use professional diagramming software to create network topology diagrams.

Ability to read, understand, and explain network topologies.

Security and Medical Requirements

Selected candidates must be able to obtain and maintain:

A required security certificate.

A medical certificate.

All selected candidates will undergo a background investigation and a pre-employment medical examination.

The selected candidate must also be able to begin employment within a reasonable period after receiving the required agency authorization and clearances/certifications.
